The first McDonald’s restaurant was started in 1948 by brothers Maurice (“Mac”) and Richard McDonald. They bought appliances for their small hamburger restaurant from salesman Ray Kroc, who was surprised by their need for eight milk shake mixers. When Kroc visited the brothers in 1954 to see how a small shop could sell so many milk shakes, he discovered a simple, efficient format that permitted the brothers to cook lots and lots of food at very low prices. A basic hamburger cost 15 cents, about half the price of other restaurants. Waiters and waitresses were not needed because customers would use a self-service station to get their own sauces, drinks, napkins and also threw their own trash away. People got their food quickly because hamburgers were cooked ahead of time and put under heat lamps.
Ray Kroc became a master of the french fry, and made cooking french fries a science, so that they tasted exactly the same, every single time. He also created a “potato computer” to perfect cooking time… However, I want you to know that Ray Kroc was truly a wild man… Crazy. Not a nice person. His story is too long, so maybe we will talk about him in another FreeTalk article….
One thing that people don’t know is that the McDonald’s Corporation actually makes little to no money from selling hamburgers… McDonald’s is a franchise, so most of the profits from the food go to the franchise owners… The McDonald’s corporation makes all of it’s money from franchise fees, the land and buildings they use for the McDonald’s (land and buildings are called real estate), and paper..
