The Science of Language

Around the 1960s and 1970s, scientists started studying the rules of grammar, spelling and pronunciation. This was helpful knowledge but remember that people learned language for at least the last 10,000 years without ever thinking about the ‘rules’.. You don’t need to know grammar rules to use them correctly… It is natural.

Language is Like Running: If you want to run faster, it can help if you know some of the science about running, doing stretches, learning about your muscles..... but you need to spend most of your time running!  Language is the same way. You can learn all the rules, but you still need to practice. But using the language and knowing how the language works are two different things.

Pre-work: Make sure you know what you will be studying before you start studying. When you know what you need to do, it makes things easier. This is true for anything you learn!

One of the best books you can buy about the science of language learning is called Fluent Forever. The writer is an opera singer, engineer, speaks 6 languages and created his own language learning app. He is very smart, and the book is super funny. You will definitely laugh and learn! However, this book will be difficult to read for non-native English speakers. You should read the book in a language you are fluent in. You can find the book in Italian here.
